RUTH PASTINE

Focused on the spontaneity of the painting process, Ruth Pastine engages the austerity of the three complementary color systems which, although seemingly finite, access limitless possibilities. Working serially is an essential aspect of her creative process, as she evolves paintings in concert with and in juxtaposition to one another furthering the perceptual interaction of color. Her work addresses heightened perception through the interaction of color contexts lending itself to phenomenology, enhancing greater awareness towards existential inquiry. Confronting the unknown is always at the edge of discovery and is the onramp to new work. Color itself, in its infinite beauty, constitutes the immeasurable field of light and space that it defines.

Pastine's long-held fascination with contradiction, the interplay of opposites, is explored through complementary color systems and underlying principles that drive her work, the tangible and the intangible, an ever-present exchange and dialogue between presence and absence, surface and depth, matter and light, light and space, the finite and the limitless, the known and the unknown. Her work continues to be a contemplative and reflective investigative, exploring light from the depths of the color spectrum, phenomena and unpredictability, and confronting the unknown through serial repetition and variation.

Born and raised in New York City, Ruth Pastine received a four-year scholarship to Cooper Union for her B.F.A.
